Powers Caught Paying Rent with Campaign Cash
Aint Nothing Going on but the Rent
Jon Powers used campaign funds to pay himself rent for a campaign office in his apartment - a clear violation of federal election regulations:
“The campaign may not pay for mortgage, rent or utilities for the personal residence of the candidate or the candidate’s fam¬ily even if part of the residence is being used by the campaign. 113.1(g)(1)(i)(E).”
Powers admitted his wrongdoing only after being confronted by the press, “Powers' spokesman made the announcement after reporters asked about Powers' campaign statements showing the rental payments…”
Powers claimed he has returned the money to his campaign and is awaiting legal action from the Federal Elections Commission. In his most recent finance filing, Mr. Powers returned $4000 to his campaign, but listed it as a contribution. And counted it with his PAC, lobbyist, and strip club owner money as part of his quarterly haul.
